Welcome to another in our Women and Beer videos series. Meet Mariah Calagione, wife of Sam Calagione, from Dogfish Head Brewery. Filming took place at the Sierra Grille in Northampton, MA at their Night Before the Night Before Christmas – Dogfish Head Vintage Beer Dinner. Mariah talks to us about her role with Dogfish Head Brewery.

Men tend to dominate the beer world. Through this series of videos we hope to show the world that although women are not always on the front lines, they are an integral part of the craft beer industry. Certainly more integral than bouncing around in bikinis on beer commercials.

The craft beer industry with its many flavorful offerings, has made beer more appealing to a female audience. Through this series we hope to dispel the myths and perhaps help some of the guys out their understand the female palette so they can share their love of beer with their wife or girlfriend. If you missed it check out our interview with the Beer Babe, a fellow advocate for women and craft beer. Stay tuned for more videos in this series, until then cheers from here for the beer.

VIDEO – During a recent trip up to American Flatbread in Burlington Vermont we got to meet Allagash Brewery owner and brewmaster Rob Tod. Rob hosts an annual beer night at American Flatbread and brought a host of great Allagash brews this year, including a cask of Four, a log of Bi-Curieux and some cellared kegs of Musette and Black (each delicious).

Rob was a great host and gave us a few minutes in the Flatbread brewery for an interview. In the video Rob shares a bit about the history of Allagash brewery, some insight into what’s new in 2010 with Allagash and answers some questions about both the packaging (cork and cage) and the bottle conditioning of their 12oz and kegs.

Our trip also gave us the opportunity to meet Paul Sailor, the owner of American Flatbread, and their brewer Destiny (watch for that interview coming up). We also got to connect with our friends at g.Housen and catch up with some of the Vermont BA folks. The food at American Flatbread is excellent and their beers and their guest beers are always top notch. Another great night, and another fun episode of here for the beer!

VIDEO – Amy sits down at our pub with the founder of Six Point Craft Ales in Brooklyn New York, Shane Welch. Shane talks about the difficulties of starting up a brewery, from the basics of securing product on a shoestring budget, to a fire that nearly put Six Point out of business. With plenty of hard work and community support Six Point Craft Ales has been able to build themselves up into a great success story, as recently noted in the New York Times.

Of course, Amy and Shane also talk beer – and about the future plans for Six Point Craft Ales. It was a pleasure chatting with Shane and sharing some of their great brews, we look forward to visiting the new brewery one day soon – of course we will share the visit with you right here, on here for the beer!

This video is part 2 of our look at the Brick Store Pub in Decatur Georgia. If you haven’t seen it already, you may want to check out the upstairs video first.

The Brick Store Pub is one of the top beer bars on the planet according to Beer Advocate magazine and once you see their cellar it will become obvious why. The Brick Store has committed to letting a huge selection of great beers age in their climate controlled cellars. Even more impressive is that the building was formerly a bank and the cellar is a collection of awesome old bank vaults – 1,000 lb. vault doors included.

As tempting as is may be to add the many of their cellared beers to their beer list, they have committed to wait it out a few years and allow the beers to truly age. They have set up a library system, so that they can occasionally open a beer or two and see how they are aging – to determine the ideal time to release each one to the beer lovers of Georgia.

In this video we get the full tour from owner Dave Blanchard and beer manager Lee Dickson. Of course we pop open a couple of great beers including a Sexual Chocolate, the Allagash 2007 Interlude and Terrapin Side Project #4.

The cellar itself is really something too see (they even have a Trappist beer throne!) but the people at the Brick Store – from Dave and Lee and their awesome hospitality, to the great group of BA’s we met that shared some killer brews with us – made this an incredible visit.

If you are ever in Georgia (seriously, anywhere in the state) be sure to take a detour to Decatur and the Brick Store – you will not be disappointed. Of course be sure to tell them that Here for the Beer sent you! They will most likely give you a confused look and free glass of water – but you never know…

In this video we take a trip out to the amazing Sunset Grill and Tap in Allston, MA for the official US launch of Duvel Green. This is the first time duvel has ever been available outside of the bottle and it is available in pubs right now. Duvel is a great bottled beer that has been around for a long time, with the unfortunate effect being that it has almost been forgotten by some (been there done that). So the Duvel Green brings a welcome reintroduction to this brand.

In this episode we get to chat with Simon Thorpe, President & CEO of Duvel. We also chat with Jake Feltenberger, Marketing Manager for Duvel USA/Ommegang Brewery and Marc Kadish President, Chef and Cellar Master of the Sunset Grill. What a great group of guys. It was certainly a fun night and one delicious beer. You can see Tim’s Duvel Green review here.

Be sure to try the Duvel Green and keep watching here for the beer. Cheers!

Winner! 2009 AHA Big Brew Day video contest!

1st Place – Most Viewed Video (8,700 and counting)

1st Place - Spirit of Big Brew

Thank you so much to the Masholes for hosting us and working with us on this project. If you are in western Massachusetts and interested in home brewing – hook up with these folks on their facebook page!

In this episode, my friend Timberly and I check out an AHA National Home Brew Day event with the Masholes, a fun group of home brewers in Massachusetts.

Six home brewers brought their equipment to one house and throughout the day brewed six different beers. Gathering as a group gave these home brewers (and the thousands of others who participated in similar events around the world) an opportunity to explore different techniques and share tricks of their craft. Of course, it also was a great opportunity to share the fruit of the labor, the beer! With the Masholes we found a group of people who were brought together by a common thread, the love of craft beer and the passion for creating it. We’ve said it several times, beer should be fun – and the Masholes have definitely figured out how to have fun while brewing good beer.

If you are in the Western Mass area and would like more information about the Masholes check out their Facebook page. If not, you can get information about home brew groups in your area at the Brewers Association website www.beertown.org Hope you enjoyed meeting the Masholes, we certainly did! We will see you next time on Here for the Beer.

Please Note: As you know, we don’t usually use YouTube, but the AHA is running a contest, for the best and most watched video from National Homebrew Day, so we are throwing our video in. So please, share this with your friends, family and fellow beer enthusiasts. Lets make the Masholes famous! You can see more about the contest on the Big Brew section of the AHA website.

Update – YouTube has banned this video as “Inappropriate” and therefore I suppose we are out of the contest…(Thanks to the AHA for keeping us in!) But we have uploaded it to our regular source, Blip.tv and hope that you enjoy it.

In this episode, we head to the Craft Brewers Conference and Trade Show in Boston, Massachusetts. This amazing conference with over 2000 attendees is run by the Brewers Association. Check out this video from the conference that features Trade Show floor. This conference was unlike any other we had ever been to. The most noticeable difference was the amount of great beer available, I mean everywhere! Beer was available throughout the trade show floor and at the many hospitality events throughout the week.

It was great to catch up with some of the friends we have made during our beer journeys and to have opportunity to make so many new ones. The most notable facet of this event was the genuine camaraderie amongst the brewers. They are a community of people willing to share their knowledge and techniques with one another. It was refreshing that they do not see each other as competition, but as colleagues. They share a common goal and that is to produce really good beer.

We hope you enjoy this video and stay tuned for a few more fun episodes from our week in Boston, right here on Here for the Beer.

In this episode, we head to Terrapin Beer Company in Athens, GA. We meet with owners and co-founders John Cochran and Brian “Spike” Buckowski, who is also the head brewer.

We were lucky enough to be there on a Saturday evening, just in time to enjoy their beer tasting and tour. I must admit this was one of the most entertaining brewery tastings I had ever been to. The atmosphere was great, we were outside on a beautiful sunny evening, with games and live music playing. No surprise that there was a really impressive turnout. I felt like I was at a picnic in the park, but with access to much better beer! Every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 5:30pm – 7:30pm they open the doors for these beer tastings and tours. The only requirement is that you purchase an $8.00 Terrapin Pint Glass from the gift shop, this pint glass includes tickets that are good for 8 4-oz sample pours of beer. Tours run every half hour during the tasting. A great way to start off your evening.

This Georgia beer is not yet available in New England, but over Christmas we received a box in the mail containing two Terrapin Beers: Big Hoppy Monster (Imperial Red Ale) and India Style Brown Ale. One of our wonderful guests at our Vermont B&B, Forty Putney Road (they were from Georgia) had sent them as a gift. It only took a few sips to recognize the quality of these beers, Terrapin was immediately added to our must visit list. Luckily it wasn’t long before we were in the area for an innkeeping conference and were able to take the field trip. Of course, Other than the quality of these beers I of course really enjoyed the branding…I just love that turtle…he gets to do everything.

In the video John gives us some insite into the branding and that crazy turle while Spike gives us an inside look at some new beers he is working on. We enjoyed meeting both John and Spike and hope that you all enjoy our video. We will see you next time on Here for the Beer … Cheers!

In this episode we speak to Jeremy Krusas, Head Brewer at the People’s Pint in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Jeremy explains his inspiring story of how he became the Brewmaster at the People’s Pint. We take a look inside the brewery and than the Pub. Tim and I frequent the People’s Pint about once a month as it is only 25 minutes south of Brattleboro, VT. We do some of the shopping for our B&B in Greenfield, so we pop into the People’s Pint for dinner and drinks before. There are plenty of places to eat in downtown Greenfield, we choose the People’s Pint because of the fresh food and fresh beer. They use farm fresh products from local farmers and organic produce when ever possible, which is something we also stand behind. We also love the sense of community in this pub, you can always find a host of locals bellied up to the bar to chat with. The People’s Pint also supports the local art community by displaying rotating art from local artists throughout the Pub. We are happy to support this local brewery and pub.

The People’s Pint is open Monday – Friday from 4pm-12am and Saturday – Sunday from 12pm – close (Note: the kitchen closes at 10pm). I would suggest giving them a call to ensure they are open if you are traveling a far distance, they are privatly owned and have been know to close up for vacations. Another tip you should know is that they do not accept credit cards so make sure you have cash, if you forget there is an ATM across the street. Perhaps we will see you at the People’s Pint someday, if not we will see you here next time on HerefortheBeer … Cheers.
