VIDEO – On the night before the night before Christmas in 2009, we attended a beer dinner at the Sierra Grill in Northampton Massachusetts. The dinner was hosted by Sam Calagione, the founder and president of Dogfish Head Brewery in Rehoboth Delaware. Throughout the night, Sam shared some great stories about himself and the brewery. This is the first is a series of episodes sharing those anecdotes with you.
In this video Sam talks about how Dogfish Head got its name, how the brewery was started and a bit about the recent world of Dogfish Head. Be sure to check out the other segments from this event right here, on here for the beer!

What a fantastic video. Sam is always a fun guy, especially when he’s had a few beers!
My favorite Sam tale is this. My daughter had a girl crush on Sam every since we took the tour in Milton DE and Sam was the guide. A few years later I was at an AHA membership event where Sam and a bunch of local brewers were in attendance. Between Bocce games I had Sam leave a message on my daughter’s cell phone. To this day she doesn’t believe it was really Sam Calagione who made the call. Sam is truly a nice guy.
Great post. He seems like a great guy (in spite of the sweater!) He’s done quite a bit for the craft beer scene and like I said, every interview I’ve seen he’s just down to earth and cool. Great story too – I always wondered where the funny name came from!
BTW – Happy New Year! Looking forward to seeing what HFTB has in store for 2010!
