In this weeks episode I head down to the ice behind our Vermont inn for some early morning ice fishing with my friend Doug (Amy was stuck inside making breakfast for the guests). Ice fishing starts early, and pretty much requires beer – so the question begged, what is the perfect ice fishing beer. This time we go with a coffee theme – sampling several coffee infused beers.
We start with Southern Tiers Jah Vah Imperial Stout, give Long Trails Imperial Coffee Stout a try, sample the BBC Coffehouse Porter and wrap with the Wolavers Alta Gracia Coffee Porter – all without catching a single fish…
Luckily, before the day was out we did catch a fish – and climb back up the hill to the inn.
The extreme cold meant these beers were a bit colder than I would have liked, which leads me to wonder what the best cold weather beer would be? Any suggestions?
If you would like to know some more about ice fishing – check out Doug’s website Brattleboro Outdoors. Cheers from here for the beer!

A Belgian style stout, the Allagash Black is something delightfully different. It pours black in color (bet you didn’t see that coming) and has a slight light tan head. Packaging is sleek and sexy (i do love a cork and cage). Tastes of chocolate, burnt coffee and a clearly Belgian style yeast. Full flavored and complex with a pleasingly bitter aftertaste. Goes down smooth and easy.
This is just the way I like my stouts: dark, dry and full bodied. Hey Allagash, I went black – and it was delicious.

Alright, as you know I am usually a session beer guy. That’s why my ratings favor good session brews. But I never turn down a beer suggestion from a professional, and so when the barkeep sent me a Dogfish Head World Wide Stout, I happily obliged.
Far from a session beer, this beer is the extreme opposite of poundable. But in such a delicious way. Dark, black, vanilla, burbon, a little bit of chocolate and sweetness – I can just imagine sitting outside by the campfire fire on a cool summer night sipping on this. Probably would pare well with this jerks bacon smores…
Of course if the high alcohol level doesn’t make you sip it slowly, the price will. At $9 a bottle (at the store, it was $12 at the pub) this beer is probably reserved for the elitists out there. Luckily I’m one of them. More for me.
Sexy as hell and yet another fun beer from the people at Dogfish. This is the perfect “I’m only having one tonight” beer. Make it count. Make it a World Wide Stout.

I am not sure who Erik is, or if he was in fact a short fat man – but what I am certain of is that he is bitter and a bit dry.
As a matter of fact, Erik here was a bit drier than I would like. A little bit smoky and some flavor of burnt brown sugar in there. I would even go so far as to say a bit sour. An interesting Belgian spin on an Irish style. That’s because Stouterik is brewed by the folks at Brasserie De La Senne / De Zenne Brouwerij in Belgium. Yes, I cut and pasted the brewery name from a real beer site because I didn’t even feel like trying to figure out what it says.
I will give the Stouterik props for being reasonable in ABV, making this drinkable on a rainy Sunday afternoon – but as for the important question of would I have another? Maybe if you were buying…
