So this is not a standard campground post, but we thought it should still show up in the map search results for campgrounds, so we’re adding it as a “listing” here.

When we were visiting Charleston South Carolina, we discovered that we could boondock at the city parking garage, right downtown.

While we were a bit apprehensive about the idea of towing our Airstream downtown, the idea of being able to stay overnight right in the middle of the action was too appealing to pass up.

What we found started as confusing, but ended up as full awesome.

First, you can in fact boondock overnight in the city parking garage downtown. Crazy enough, if you enter after 5pm and leave before 8am, it’s also only $4! 24 hours of parking there (boondocking included) is only $16.

There are 8 marked RV Spaces, however they are only 38′ long and are head-in angle parking. While that’s not quite long enough for us to park in our 27′ airstream (without disconnecting) we were offered the opportunity to park in the bus parking (parallel parking spaces that are 70′ long) instead which was perfect.

The confusing part is how to enter this garage. The entrance you need to use in an RV is located on Mary Street, one block from the Charleston Visitors Center which is at 375 Meeting St. You’ll need to go around the block, passing the exit of the garage and then the entrance is on the right. You’ll pull in past the RV angle in spaces, if they’re too small for your rig make the right hand turn as if you’re exiting and just before the payment booths on either side are marked bus parking.

Now, it was noisy here (but we can sleep through anything) and the lights are on all night (which was actually comforting considering we were downtown). While we were there the booths at the exit were staffed the whole time which was also comforting as there are people coming and going all night around you.

This might not be for everyone, but for those of you who love the idea of “urban camping” like us, the opportunity to walk to all that downtown Charleston has to offer and then retire to your own “home on wheels”, parked for $4, outside hotels where rooms are $300/night…. Well that’s something worth doing.

Notes and Tips

  1. Judy and Rick Rutan

The Rutans from Michigan in a 25 ft. LTV Unity are so grateful to you. We took your advise and it awsome. We were able to park in the RV spots, use the restroom facilities at the University of Charleston Law School that’s open 7am-11pm. It’s located adjacent to the RV spots. We were able to walk everywhere. Wish we had more time. 4 day park limit. Rates for 24 hours now at $18. What a bargain. Your directions were perfect. Again many thanks.

At HereForTheBeer our purpose is to help people find great local beers, in new or unique places. Go Explore!

We started this directory and blog back in 2009 to share our craft beer adventures. Since then we’ve been fortunate to not only have visited over 700 breweries and brewpubs across the country, but have opened our own craft beer bar, restaurant and brewery in Vermont.

Today HereForTheBeer.com is no longer a public directory, but a personal travel journal.  However we hope that our travels will continue to be a resource for anyone who finds their own travel motivated by craft beer.
