Alcatraz Island
The @Large exhibit by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei at Alcatraz. A vocal critic of his nation’s government, Ai was secretly detained by Chinese authorities for 81 days in 2011. @Large turns Alcatraz into a space for dialogue about how we define liberty and justice, individual rights and personal responsibility. This is the former laundry facility, which has been closed to the public until now.
Also open for the first time as part of this exhibit is the former hospital at Alcatraz.
