2009 Here for the Beer – Year in Review


Hello everyone, December marks the our first anniversary here at hereforthebeer.com. We want to thank all of the wonderful people that we had the opportunity to meet this year. Friday the Firkinteenth – Grey Lodge Pub, Philadelphia


VIDEO – Friday the Thirteenth is anything but unlucky for those of you who live near the Philadelphia Northeast.  That’s because on every Friday the 13th for the last 11 years, the Grey Lodge Pub in Northeast Philadelphia has held what they call “Friday the Firkinteenth” and being able to try 20+ cask beers is certainly good luck.

Friday the Firkinteenth started in 1998 as a “gimmick” to get a budding beer audience to understand and appreciate cask conditioned beer.  Scoats, the founder of Grey Lodge and the Firkinteenth event explains that in it’s early days the event had only one or two casks.  Today the event has grown to include 24 casks of beer from a variety of breweries.  The event is held on every Friday the 13th so it is at the mercy of the calendar – in 2010 there is only 1 and it’s in August – so it promises to be a big one…

In this video we talk to Scoats about the event and get a rundown on what is cask beer from Nodding Head Brewery’s Brewmaster Gordon Grubb.  We also get the privilege of chatting with some great folks attending the event.  Including Joe Sixpack from the Philadelphia Daily News and one of our favorite beer writers, Lew Bryson – who has been covering beer in the New Jersey and Pennsylvania area with his blog and books and trying his best to rid Pennsylvania of the PLCB for years now.

We would be remiss to not mention that Grey Lodge is open year round and when we lived in the area, was one of our favorite pubs.  They have 11 draft lines that they dedicate to great craft beers, a great bottle list and good cheap food.  For more about Grey Lodge check out their website.  They are located at 6235 Frankford Ave in Northeast Philadelphia (215) 825-5357.  They are also on Facebook and Twitter.

Cask Night at the Craft Brewers Conference 2009



In this episode, we are at Cask Night hosted by Harpoon Brewery in Boston, MA. Cask Night was the last of the many hospitality events offered at the Craft Brewers Conference. This event featured 60 different cask conditioned beers, some that have never been brewed before and others that were making there premier, such as the Imperial IPA by Otter Creek Brewery (a must have for all of you fellow hopheads out there at 135 IBU this beer was like a great dream).

This event was also my personal favorite as you can see in frames 1:29 and 2:22. I enjoyed myself so much that I forgot to change the setting on the microphone, so I must apologize that most of the interviews are difficult to hear. I promise to do better next time.

Dogfish Head 75 Minute IPA Simul-Cask at the Sierra Grille Northampton MA




We attended the Dogfish Head 75 Minute Simul-Cask aka Johnny Cask at The Sierra Grille in Northampton, MA.  At precisely 7:50pm the beer began pouring.  The 75 Minute IPA is a mixture of the ever so popular Dogfish Head 60 and 90 Minute IPAs with a special whole leaf cascade dry-hopping session.  After hopping, the beer was transferred into firkin’s where fresh yeast and Maple Syrup were added.  What a fun event this turned out to be.  We love the creative ways that Sam and the Dogfish Head team bring beer lovers together.

We were invited to this event by the owner of The Sierra Grille, O’Brian Tomalin.  Though we went for the beer, we left with a great first impression of The Sierra Grille.  The food was excellent, served in a tapas style.  The menu offered a wide variety of reasonably priced small plate options ,  including $3 desserts.  Don’t worry if you have a big appetite the menu also offers about 8 full entrees.  The beer selection was top notch including, among others, HE’BREW Jewbalation Twelve and Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA.
